Kyle is, simply put, a bigoted asshole. And I both love and hate him. While he started off as a self-insert, he very quickly changed enough that I can't really consider him one at all anymore. I'd had this problem with both Neil, Wyll, and Tiger, so I think I really am just cursed to never have a self-insert in the Saints Row universe.
Kyle was born in an unnamed, fictional, farming town in central Missouri. Like most farming families, he grew up with a ton of siblings, but he just so happened to be the oldest out of all of them. And so, as the oldest, he was destined to have his name put on the farm when he got old enough. Kyle has never been a hard worker and the thought of being in charge of the entire farm both scared and angered him, so one day he packed up and left for Michigan in the middle of the night. This is how he got to Stilwater.
In Stilwater, Kyle met Kaz and the rest of the Saints. Considering he was raised on a farm in central Missouri, all of his ideas of what a gang was were... skewed, to say the least. He spent most of his time in Saints HQ smoking weed and laying about. This frustrated the rest of the Saints, and when Carlos was hospitalized for his injuries obtained during Red Asphalt, Kaz forced him into the Lieutenant role and assigned him to the Brotherhood. Kyle, angered, grit his teeth and complied, though he definitely complained more than he should've been allowed to.
It wasn't long, however, before things turned on him. Maero was not pleased with the fact that Carlos had survived his assassination attempt. He was kidnapped by Maero and the Brotherhood and shoved into the back of a trunk. He was going to end up just like Jessica, and Jessica hadn't even been kidnapped herself yet. Kyle's kidnapping is what gave Kaz the idea to take Jessica to the rally. Kaz arrived in time to rescue Kyle, and Jessica suffered her fate. Realizing what could've happened to him, the fear and near-death experience warped the situation in his mind. He was grateful for Kaz's rescue, but his hatred for the gang who had forced him into this situation in the first place roiled in him like a boiling kettle. He fled Stilwater in the same manner as he had as a young teen and headed for Steelport.
